5th December - Selection rationale

The novice chase that takes place at Plumpton this afternoon, is clearly the race of the day (and by some margin !).
It is made a particularly fascinating contest, by the presence of Gift of Dgab, who has jetted in from Tony Martin’s County Meath yard. I think it is fair to assume that they haven’t come over for a day by the sea !
Also in the contest is the Alan King trained Invictus, who made a big impression when wining a novice handicap on his chasing debut. However, he was running of a rating of 122 that day - and the race fell apart a little, He is likely to find this a much tougher test…
Maringo Bay, was a decent hurdler last term and makes his seasonal/fencing debut today.
However, the one I want to be one is the Pual Nicholls trained Indian Daudaie.
Some of you may recall that we were on the horse at Haydock last month when it made it’s seasonal debut in a decent handicap hurdle.
It was all the rage that day, being backed down from the 6/1 (which we took ;) ) to 5/2 favourite. However, it ran a really disappointing race that day.
I’ve no idea why that was – and if it does the same today, it won’t win ! However, at the odds available, I think it is worth risking that it will bounce back…
Simply, if this race had been run at the back end of last seasons over hurdles, Indian Daiudaie would be an odds on shot, receiving a stone from his 2 main rivals.
Of course, time moves on and things change – the presence of fences rather than hurdles for a start !
However, punters can have short memories – and I think today is a glaring example of that.
On my tissue, there would be little between the 3 main principals – therefore at 9/2 (or even 4/1), Indian Daidaie has to be a bet to bounce back to form.

1pt win Indian Daidaie 9/2

  1. Thanks for the comment on my blog http://waywardlad.blogspot.com - I must admit, I did not know that about Davy Russell, but his lack of knowledge of the Plumpton track showed when he completely misread how tight the turn into the straight was knocking Indian Daudaie sideways and allowing Invictus thru' on the inner.

  2. It looked to me as if Davy was so intent on not letting Indian Daudaie box him in, he forgot there was a turn coming up !
In fairness to Davy, he is a top class jockey – probably the best riding in Ireland, on a daily basis. His contract with Gigginstown (which is owned by Michael O’ Leary – of Ryanair fame) would match the contract of any UK based rider – and that includes Ruby, AP & Barry Geraghty ! He’s a very reliable jockey and is not often outsmarted. You may recall the ride he gave to Dix Villez when he stole the cross country race at the November Cheltenham meeting, a few years back – he certainly made a few of the UK based jockeys look pretty silly that day….
