18th January - Race review

Horse: Rear Gunner
Advised Price: 20/1
SP: 16/1
BSP: 19.12
Finishing position: PU

Rear Gunner didn’t exactly cover himself in glory this afternoon…
He made a bad mistake at the cross fence (the 3rd) and that seemed to affect his confidence. He then hit pretty much every fence from that point onwards and was eventually pulled up half way down the back straight.
He couldn’t be followed again, until he has sorted out his jumping issues.

The race was won by Glenns Boy, who was gaining compensation for a very unlucky defeat last time out at Warwick. He got the better of Ikorodu Road and Monbeg Dude, in a stirring finish.

Later on the card, Turko ran a fair race to finish fourth in the season’s first Hunter Chase. The race was won in scintillating style, by Chapoturgeon. He was entitled to win the race on official ratings – but could hardly have been more impressive in doing so.
There must be a doubt about him getting the 3m2f of the Foxhunters at the Cheltenham festival – but if he does, he will take some beating…

  1. I there was a couple ofinteresting ones to be taken from the race Andrew. Any thoughts on Cast Cada and Sound Stage, Cast Cada in particular ran a much better race than recent efforts, if it got dropped a few pounds and appeared in a smaller field race it might be worth a look. Only two horses carrying more weight than it finished ahead of it though granted there was only about six or seven of them carrying as much or more weight than it. I also only realised just now that Ceepeegee was only carrying 9st 4 when you factor in the clamiers allowance.

  2. I thought that Sound Stage was the one to take out of the race. He ran as if he needed the outing (which wasn’t too surprising, as he hadn’t run for 80 day previously): travelling well until the third last. He should come on for the run and is definitely one to look out for next time.
Cast Cada was also an eye-catcher, however I would be a little more wary with him. He travelled nicely to the end of the back straight but ultimately finished well beaten. He was pulled up in his two previous races this season and also travelled OK in the second of those. He wears a tongue tie and you would have to be a little concerned that he is having breathing difficulties. We’ve seen first had what this can do, with the likes of Lucky Landing and Solitary Palm.
I noticed that Ceepeegee was carrying a featherweight when I looked at the race the night before. That said, I just couldn’t make a case for him. It’s interesting the money still came though – and he ran OK – just probably not up to that class…
